Costs to Keep in Mind When Renovating a Bathroom

Bathroom remodeling is on top of many homeowners’ list, as it has many benefits – visual enhancement, increased comfort, safety and home resale value.

If you’re dreaming of a perfect bathroom, here are some things to consider so you can properly plan for the renovation:

A survey by National Kitchen and Bath Association showed that the average cost of a bathroom remodel in 2016 was $11,364; material cost was 80 percent, and labor 20 percent.

Half of the participants shared that they paid between $10,000 and $29,999, while 31 percent reported paying more than $30,000. An interesting piece of data – millennials (age group 18-37) paid an average of $16,421 for a bathroom remodel.

When looking at different material options, it’s wise to choose quality, especially knowing how much traffic the bathroom gets. For instance, getting a cheap toilet that leaks onto your new floors will prove to be not just a waste of money, but also a cause of frustration. Instead, go for quality items and material you know will last, and look for sales, rebates and other promotions to save money.

An important aspect of a bathroom remodel to keep in mind is the inconvenience that comes with it. Without the access to a bathroom, inconvenience, to say the least, is inevitable.

While predicting how long exactly the bathroom remodeling would take, what you can do is prepare for the project by: locate alternative bathrooms on-site or nearby; plan for your bathroom to be unusable for at least three weeks; keep lines of communication with your contractor open and clear during all phases of the remodel and on when things will be done.

Remodeling your bathroom does not have to happen all at once. If you’re on a tight budget, or cannot be without your bathroom for weeks, consider doing one step at a time. You can do different things in stages, such as installing new lighting or ventilation, followed by a new vanity or countertops, and keep renovating in this manner. However, keep in mind that the larger tasks are best tackled at the same time; so if you plan to replace the tub and install tile floor, having it done all at once may save you labor charges as well as more inconvenience down the road.
