New Year, New Home

With a New Year, people often find themselves looking for ideas for changes that they can bring to their home – from something in dire need of an upgrade, to spicing things up with new colors and materials, to creating new spaces.

Some may always choose classic style for their renovations; however, many are more inclined to apply fresh and new trends to improve the overall look and feel of their home.

If you’re looking to give your home a new look, here are some home remodeling trends for the upcoming year:

Overall, design trends this year seem to be leaning towards minimalism and sustainability – the focus is on simple yet classic styles.

Open Spaces

Open living spaces will continue to be a top sought-after trend.  Homeowners don’t want to feel cramped inside their own house, especially in common areas.  If you haven’t already, then it’s time for you to break down those walls and barriers.  For instance, you can keep your living area, dining room, and kitchen all in one open space.

Also, this trend includes open shelving units, which adds to an airier feel of a room.

Flooring

If you still have an all-carpeted flooring, it’s time for you to change that.  The trend is to use carpets as an accent point in areas like your bedroom or living room.

All-wooden floor seems to be designers’ favorite, and preferably in darker shades.  If the wood is not in your budget, you can achieve this look through wood-style laminates and vinyl.

The minimalist look that younger homeowners and architects love would also be clean cement-finish floors.  And if you like tiles, plain and simple is the trend, even if combining different colors.

Colors

Neutral colors remain very popular in 2020, but the trend is to move away from grays and migrate towards warmer colors

For instance, even if you don’t wish to do it in all other rooms in your house, an area where you can make this change is in your hallway or foyer – consider repainting it in mellow yellow or light coral.  When all other areas of your house are painted in just one color, you can make one area your focal point with this pop of color.  Add some vibrant plants around this area and your home will instantly start to feel fresh and new.

Kitchen

White cabinets are not really going away – they are just being accompanied by wood and other colors in open shelving, countertops, drawers, shelves, and pullouts, adding visual interest and warmth and breaking up all that white.

Also, you can combine white and another color for your cabinets, such as light grays and blues.

If you’d rather have dark countertops, the trend is to go for a matte, honed or leathered finish for the stone, offering a much more modern but still classic look.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are becoming more of a spa-like wellness retreats in homes, and one of the trends is to incorporate benches, stools, and window seats.  You can have one near the vanity for your nighttime skincare routine, or by the bathtub/shower to keep towels, lotions, candles, books, phone, etc.  Also, in the form of built-in benches or seats that provide versatility.

Another bathroom trend is having double floating vanities.  Double vanities can free up floor space to give the appearance of more room and makes cleaning the floor easy. Nearly seven in 10 renovating homeowners elected to install a double-sink setup, according to the 2019 Houzz Bathroom Trends Study.

Fully wrapped, bold powder rooms. Using bold style choices in powder rooms is not a new trend. However, a fresh way designers and homeowners are going big in powder rooms is by wrapping the entire space in a feature wallpaper or other similar material.

Cheerful Laundry Rooms

A recent trend is to make laundry rooms enjoyable spaces to be in – by introducing energizing colors, patterns, and features to transform laundry rooms into lively, cheerful, and quirky spaces.
